Friday’s Memo – What’s New Media

One thing is definitely clear – more than one person or organization is needed to stop the world’s economic decline.  We are in this together.

I’ve read executive transcripts, listened to speeches on the future of news and heard journalists’ questions about their destiny.  I’ve observed as the Boston Globe’s death is often pronounced and yet deliveries continue. 

Attention to particular issues usually heightens during an event or occasion to raise a flag.  This week was the Newspaper Association of America’s convention and NAA’s turn to present another view on the future of news.  Their perspective is from the print and new media special interest.

Eric Schmidt, chief executive at Google, opined  newspapers and new media will live together.  He spoke of various and interesting revenue models.  The CEO proposed a Google and newspaper partnership.  In my opinion, Schmidt made an excellent pitch to the audience whose archives would improve Google Books.

All week Broadcast Newsroom Computing wrote about a new business climate.  There are numerous labor negotiations underway in news shops.  Every union meeting and negotiation I recall over more than 30-years involved contention and distrust.  Honestly there was good reason for those postures then.  Circumstances demand more openness.

There is a future for all, I believe.  Determining its structure and income potential is fascinating.  This purgatory has disrupted all traditional business expectations.  The headaches end when every special interest understands new media is all media – television, radio, print, and the Internet. It’s broad and narrow at the same time.  We all have a role but a new one.

So as we sit around conference tables and seat ourselves in auditoriums to ponder our future think of Anita Campbell from Small Business Trends ways to talk about tough times.  Campbell exhorts confidence,  practicing what you advise, sharing ideas and open communications.
